“Best-selling author Julie James arrived on the romantic fiction scene in 2008 with her first contemporary romance, Just the Sexiest Man Alive, a story filled with what readers now appreciate as James’ trademark intelligent humor, classy characters and witty banter. But writing contemporary romance wasn’t James’ first or even second ambition. James studied law, graduating from the University of Illinois College of Law. She clerked for the United States Court of Appeals in Jacksonville, and then practiced law with one of the nation’s largest law firms for several years until she began writing …screenplays. Not novels. Screenplays. After Hollywood producers optioned two of her scripts, she left the practice of law to write full time. And it’s a good thing for us that she did.
James, a mother of two small children, took time out of her hectic schedule to talk about how she came to write contemporary romance, what inspires the sexy banter in her stories, and her latest release, About That Night.
Pamela: Your initial foray into writing involved screenplays. Unlike most people who write screenplays, yours were optioned. Can you give us a hint as to what they were about? Is there any chance we’ll see them coming to the silver screen?
Julie: The first script I wrote — actually, the first anything I’d written other than legal briefs, etc. — was a romantic comedy titled The Andrews Project. It’s about a lawyer who is sent to Los Angeles by her firm to litigate a sexual harassment case. While she’s in L.A., her firm asks her to coach the biggest actor in Hollywood, Jason Andrews, for a legal thriller he’s about to begin filming. She finds his “charmingly arrogant” attitude annoying, and he finds it very intriguing that she’s the one woman who basically wants nothing to do with him. Hijinks ensue.
Now, many readers are probably thinking that story sounds awfully familiar … and they would be right. The Andrews Project ultimately became my first book, Just the Sexiest Man Alive……”
